What is functional movement? The short answer is real world situational biomechanics. The ability to move the body with proper muscle and joint function. I am passionate about this topic. After having two back surgeries I was from moving my body in any way, never mind with muscle intelligence and awareness. After taking years of yoga and finally becoming a yoga teacher myself, I started to dive into functional movement. Often times my yoga classes include some portion of this topic, but I think it is important to step away from our routines sometimes and explore other approaches.
When we add this approach into our yoga practice, into our workouts and daily activities, it helps us strengthen and stretch, unwind, unbind and stabilize and mobilize. We begin to become aware of our body mechanics, our patterns; where we can improve and develop so that we can ultimately live in a pain free, balanced manner.
